  4.     Since last June's crackdown on the student democracy
  5. movement, China has announced that it has put to death several
  6. dozen "counterrevolutionaries." The actual total may be much
  7. higher. In a telex to Chinese Premier Li Peng last week, Amnesty
  8. International called for an end to continuing secret executions
  9. that it termed "judicial killing." The human rights organization
  10. said it had evidence that the Chinese government had decided to
  11. shoot all prisoners charged with "most serious crimes" but to
  12. announce only enough deaths to intimidate would-be dissidents.

  14.     In its new research report on the suppression of the
  15. protests by the People's Liberation Army, Amnesty labeled the
  16. official government toll of 200 deaths a "gross underestimate."
  17. Citing reports from witnesses, Amnesty claimed that soldiers
  18. firing indiscriminately into crowds killed at least 1,000
  19. civilians in Beijing and 300 in Chengdu. A government spokesman
  20. in Beijing said the charges were "entirely ungrounded" and that
  21. the demonstrators had used "terrorist means." Chinese embassies
  22. abroad released a grainy video presenting the official version
  23. with a narrator claiming that no one was killed in Tiananmen
  24. Square.
